Author: [Petr Štembera]

He followed his studies of human sciences at the University in Prague. He is working also today at the Graphic Department of the Museum of Applied Arts in Prague. One of the forerunner of body art and performance in Eastern Europe, influenced by existencialism and Zen Buddhism. With his friend, Jan Mlčoch, he prepares performances of aschetic and ritual, sometime autodestructive character in Budapest, Pécs, Warsaw, Lódż, East-Berlin, Wrocław and Los Angeles and San Francisco. Under the influence of the Charta 77 (a democratic civil right movement, starting from Prague), his thinking became more political (see his action Spartakiade, 1980) than stopped his art activity  and began to study Yoga, Eastern martial arts and English translation.
His conceptual works in the end of 60s and the beginning of 70s are very reduced but ironic in the same time: he sends data of the official Czechoslovakian weather report to artists all over the world or sends classic painting reproductions to friends asking them to "reproduce this gesture". - Lives in Prague. (After Global Conceptualism: Points of Origin 1950s–1980s, ed. by Philomena Mariani, Queens Museum of Art, New York, 1999, 259  [catalogue of the exhibition organized by Luis Camnitzer, Jane Farver, Rachel Weiss])
